The Emperor's Bowl, 2009

In July, 2009, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan came to the Hawaiian Islands to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. The Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation in Honolulu, named after the Emperor, wanted to present him with a special gift. Ultimately, Scott Hare was commissioned to carve a wooden bowl, which was to be presented to the couple during their stay. Scott turned the piece of milo wood on a lathe, then sculpted it into the likeness of a chrysanthemum with the Japanese Imperial Seal as its base. The gift was much appreciated, and honored with a special name…THE EMPEROR’S BOWL. It features 16 petals and will remain the only one of its kind.
